Artefacto designed an ‘open book quest’ at the Flossie conference (November, 2013), held at Queen Mary, University of London. This was an experiment in real-time distribution of digital books at an event using QR codes and other related mobile technologies. Users could follow the map to find and download free ebooks from various locations around the conference venue.
This installation served as a proof of concept for curating and distributing collections of openly licenced books to readers with smart mobile devices in a site specific context. For this installation we curated and provided distribution for a number of e-books based on technical subjects and the main themes of Flossie 2013, relevant for both for new and experienced developers and others interested in open source technologies.
Access to the distributed content was in the form of a quest, geared to encouraging users to physically explore the FLOSSIE events programme (and the location it was held in) – tags around the conference building needed to be found by the user in their OpenBookQuest in order to access the digital content provided by each tag.
